back links

Backlinks often described as ‘inbound links’ are key to the visibility of your web pages in the search engines and attracting visitor traffic. When thinking about backlinks there are three things you need to consider, the source from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and the content of the page to which the backlinks sends the visitor to.

The amount of backlinks

The number of backlinks to a page is one of the elements the search engines take into account when deciding where to position the page in the SERPS (Search Engine Page Results).

The source of the backlinks

Backlinks are like votes – the higher the number of votes (backlinks) the more relevant and popular the page is viewed by the search engine. But ‘votes’ passed through backlinks from trusted or authoritative pages to a page have greater influence over the search engines view of this page than backlinks originating from pages with less ‘trust’ or authority. Great examples of trusted sources of backlinks carrying higher authority are pages in education (.edu) and government (.gov) web sites..

Google Page Rank

Google has the concept of ‘page rank’, this is the property it attributes to a page it considers to have accumulated authority over time from backlinks pointing towards it.

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it sometimes has a label a word or text associated with the information at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines give to the link. If the content of the page is about ‘parenting’ and the backlink on the page is labeled or given the ‘anchor’ text ‘parenting’ then the search engines consider this to be of more value to the searcher looking for sites related to ‘parenting’ than if the backlink was labeled ‘babycare’.

Common mistakes

It’s not unusual for novices to confuse the quantity with the quality of backlinks and easily be frustrated by their lack of progress Having a large number of backlinks to your page doesn’t automatically mean the search engines will view your page as relevant.

How to create backlinks

So let me share with you my fail safe method for getting backlinks that will make the search engines take notice of you and bring the right type and relevant traffic to your web site.

  1. To begin with you should focus on choosing the correct keywords.
  2. I always aim to create a keyword cloud.
  3. I most often start with a single primary keyword or key phrase which has significant visitor traffic.
  4. To discover how much visitor traffic is being generated by searches for my primary keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.
  5. The Google tool creates a list of keywords related to my main keyword and from this list I flesh out my cloud.
  6. Using this cloud I put together a selection of content containing articles, videos and blog posts each with backlinks labeled with the right anchor text and then use a suite of content distribution systems to send my content to a group of directories.
  7. My golden rule is to author content that will attract traffic and compel them to follow the backlinks to my money pages as well as send backlinks.

How you shouldn’t acquire backlinks

backlinks

Hmmmm, this is a multi-faceted concept and I need to emphasise it’s not an exact science. But here is what I know in my research at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority – basics

The more authority your site has the better you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your content. The great news is that authorities trusted by people are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A good illustration is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of content and it’s an established fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these web addresses to your site will send authority to your site. Another shining example is Wikipedia as the web pages here are mostly added by by tribes of people as opposed to a single person.

So it follows that authority is largely influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative content link to your web pages then you receive their influence and as far as Google is concerned you become more authoritative and hence the trust in your content by Google increases.

How Google pronounces what is and isn’t authoritative is a guarded secret for solid reasons and falls in line with Google’s philosophy of “Do no evil”. The last thing the Internet needs is an individual or a group exploiting the mechanisms that Google uses in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological resource of our times.

Backlinking methods you should avoid

In the same vein it’s valuable to state some ‘black hat sources and methods of creating backlinks that Google not only disapproves of but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘classify’ as negative authorities. In no particular order of severity, the prime examples are:

  • Paid backlinks – hubs where individuals buy and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that have links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main theme.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or otherwise
  • Fast growth – there are a large selection of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t stupid. Any sudden increase in the amount of backlinks is going to register on Google’s radar, especially if it’s a recently registered domain.
  • Backlinks from villainous web pages – these are particularly henous as you are guilty by association – need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on dodgy ground, but key press properties appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely seen significant numbers of the same article over and over again on different web sites with no penalties, I am still monitoring this, only as a percentage of the results I am seeing go against the consistent behaviors I usually expect to see. More on this is in a future post….

Dominate Adwords. Dominate Niche Marketing. Dominate The Search Engines.

Offsite SEO (search engine optimization) is all about back links! Onsite SEO (search engine optimization) can only take your site so far, but good offsite SEO can propel you site to page one of the SERPs (search engine results page). This is where you want to be-if making money online is one of your goals:o)! Back links vary in strength and authority in the eyes of the search engines. So which backlinks should you concentrate on? Here’s a list of some of the best sources of backlinks: Natural backlinks-the kind you get for writing the best content available. Write high quality content that will “bait” other webmasters to link to it! I feel these are the kind of links you should be going after (some of the best for seo)! Also with this type of link it takes no effort on your part (after you write the piece of course), you just check your back links and ‘voila’ there they are! Links from the top blogs in your niche-While hard to come by, these can be very beneficial! Whether you trade for them, buy them (frowned upon by Goog!) or whatever, they can give you blog a much needed boost up the serps! Article Marketing-This is becoming my favorite way to obtain back links for several reasons-you have complete control of the article title, content, keywords used, anchor text used, etc. By becoming the “expert” on your niche topic, you can find additional research unnecessary, and writing about this topic can be done quickly and easily! Writing articles quickly just takes practice, and knowing your niche topic well. I’ve written five good 500-800 word articles in just a few hours, a new record for me! Plan on making Article Marketing an ongoing effort as this is the best way move up in the serps or to even hold your own. Get to know other bloggers in your niche and offer do a “guest post”-Just for their blog, be sure to only offer high quality, original content. You might be amazed at the number of webmasters that will trade a few links for good quality content (I will!). Of course you need a link or two in the guest post back to your site;o). Add Hubpages, Blogspot blogs, Squidoo Lenses, etc-As they can bring much needed link-juice to your money site, and by themselves gain some authority. If making money online is your goal (it’s mine) once you find a niche that is making you some money you just need to build more Internet real estate (web sites, blogs, etc) in that niche! Become your competition, build even more inter-linked blogs, hubpages, lens, etc. Blog Directories-Takes a little time, but it’s free and I feel it’s worthwhile, so give them a go. Leave Comments On Related Forums and Blogs-Be sure to leave relevant comments and posts. Comment of related blogs in your niche, but make sure the links will be do-follow, also look for blogs that have Keywordluv/Commentluv plugins, as well as the Top Commentator plugin (as this can give you a site-wide link!). Get social-Get involved in the social sites, in other words start twittering, digging, stumbling, tumblring, you get the idea! It’s been said that you should spend about 20% of your time writing content, performing onsite SEO, etc. and about 80% building high quality back links (offsite SEO.). If making money online is in your plans at all, you should try to build as many good relevant back links (on an ongoing basis) as possible. This can get you to the first spot on page one of the serps (hopefully) and bring you a ton (depending on your keywords) of search engine traffic to monetize! Good luck and remember back links, back links, back links! For more info on offsite seo, onsite seo, link baiting, etc. visit my site and learn how to Earn Money Online!

BREAKING NEWS: Calling all WordPress Blog Owners

About me

I evaluate Internet Marketing strategies and tactics as a full time profession. Every week I am overwhelmed with questions on my blog from people struggling with Internet marketing. I know what it is like to struggle financially, pay the bills and feed a family so I do this for money (because I have a family to support) and to help others in a similar situation.

Sadly a substantial number of Internet Marketing content and tools I evaluate is sub standard. Until recently the results of my testing have been published on a tiny number of sites whose owners have commissioned me to contribute in return for assisting me with my evaluations.

Over 600 products tested

Over a five year period I have evaluated more than 600 products and I will only be publishing reviews on products that are still on the market. Every product review is a direct result of me using the product for real and naturally I will be sharing the rough and the smooth with my audience.

Easy to use and organised directory

I am determined that everyone discovers my site gets good value so I am going to make sure that every ‘product’ summary is classified in terms of what they can expect to spend, the level of skill they will need, how much effort they should spend and how long it usually take to see some results.

First Report – The ‘blueprint’ for WordPress blog success

I am going to start with WordPress Blogs and what products and techniques you can use to monetize them. Blogging is something that everyone should do and can earn income from and so everyone who signs up to my list will receive easy to follow instructions on how to set up a WordPress blog and turn it into a site that can generate cash.

Create once and replicate

Blogs are amazing in as much once you get one working properly and earning cash then you simply copy it. I have a basic rule of ‘getting a rope across the river’ before commencing on any large amount of work so I always commence with constructing a prototype that I develop into a blueprint that I can evaluate, refine and replicate, to do this you have to really understand what methods and tools you need to use.

No bullshit, just answers.

So if you have a WordPress blog or you need some practical and personal help with your choice of Internet Marketing products then please do sign up to my list at www.backlinksclinic.com.

See you there

Links Rule Over Content

I am sure that by now you have heard the old phrase content is king.  I can tell you confidently based on the results I’ve gotten the content is King debate is total crap.  Links are the true king which unlock the door way to your number one Google rankings.

This really is the case on blog marketing, even if you may not have heard it before.  I am not going to reveal the names of sites just to protect them as they are not my own sites.  Here is the secret: content isn’t king, but one way links ARE!

Recently I found this to be true because of the new client I started working for who couldn’t get to the first page of Google.

As with any new client I take a look at what they’re already doing and I was appalled they even were able to get the rankings they currently had.  All the pages were nasty, poorly written content that looked to have been written by someone who does not speak English, or by someone who English no speak.  There were even hints and some evidence pointing to some of the content being created by a cheap and crappy version of an article spinner and maybe even a free spinner.

Due to poor keyword research by the previous SEO guy many of these pages were attempting to compete for very competitive keywords.

A 5 year old could do this good even with only a free article spinner he got in 2 minutes off of download com.

The internal site structure was mixed up, the internal links had errors like ‘home’ as anchor text, the sitemap was missing, and you don’t even want to know what was coming in from other sites.

So here’s what’s immediately clear from this result, if content was King there is no way in heck that those pages belonged on the first page of any search engine, not to mention Google!  I went on with my study and research. I will tell you about my finding.

Each of these websites had tons of one way links leading to them, though they were often spam like links from untrustworthy websites.  Next I took a look at their poorly ranking pages to see if there were problems immediately apparent and sure enough there were because these pages had no or very few incoming links.

After copying links from the other pages, it only took two weeks to get my clients’ website on the first page of a Google search results for every single site I did for them.

I did this mainly to prove a point to them and get fast results and now am going back to get them quality links from power, authority domains so their sites will have staying power in their first page rankings.

You can probably guess I got a full-time Search engine optimization company blog marketing gig.  These guys weren’t business idiots they just didn’t know what they were doing from a search engine optimization standpoint. So go out and get lots of high quality links even if you content isn’t that great.

What is link building about? Why are links so important? Why do companies use link building technique? The answers are quite simple and lie on the surface.

The link building is a process of creating inbound links to ones internet pages. In fact, it is one of the most effective and important factors getting to the top of major online search engines. It is the best way to make your site popular and attract relevant traffic.

One may think that the more links you have, the better you perform. In fact, it is better to focus on quality, not quantity. Choosing those, who links to you is as much important as how many link to you.

Good one-way links are very useful in increasing your link popularity, what matters a lot when popular search engines are ranking your webpages. Thus, the more quality links you have, the more popularity you get. The combination of both methods will allow you to bring visitors from the reciprocal linking website, while one-way links are important to your visibility and credibility.

Link building takes time, but treat it as a long-run investment into your business. Why link building is so advantageous for search engine optimization?
